Plot

“…And Counting!” (Letter Three) is a postmortem of Two Letters, and a journey into the present state of theatre, culture (and funding). Forced to fund his Two Letters theatre project, using his entire RRSP account, having hit a wall in the Italian-Canadian community in Toronto (community leaders and media) and in the mainstream (arts councils and media), and playing to small audiences all over the city of Toronto, while the theatre community and colleagues ran for cover or were missing in action, the actor/writer recounts his journey in hell and his encounters with those who create that hell, realizing, in the end, that it may be better to work for an arts council in Canada than to be an artist, and that as an artist he may be worth more dead than alive.

“…And Counting!” (Letter Three) rappresenta un’analisi retrospettiva delle opere Two Letters, ed un viaggio nello stato attuale del teatro, della cultura e dei finanziamenti. Costretto a finanziare il suo progetto teatrale Two Letters attingendo interamente ai propri risparmi pensionistici, avendo battuto la testa contro il muro nel tentativo di sensibilizzare la comunita’ italocanadese di Toronto (sia gli esponenti di spicco che i media) nonche’ del mainstream (enti artistici e media) ed esibendosi davanti a piccoli pubblici in tutta Toronto, mentre la comunita’ teatrale ed i colleghi fuggivano od erano assenti, l’attore/scrittore Nardi racconta il proprio viaggio all’inferno ed i suoi incontri con coloro che hanno creato tale inferno, rendendosi conto che, alla fine, potrebbe essere meglio lavorare per un ente artistico in Canada piuttosto che essere un artista vero e proprio, e che come artista potrebbe essere meglio per lui essere morto piuttosto che vivo.

Background
The evolution of video languages and the increasingly sophisticated techniques for video manipulation now impose a systematic rethinking about the ways in which this complex group of factors influences the expressive forms of contemporary art experimentation. In order to understand this phenomenon, since 2006 a group of Italian researchers from the universities of Bologna, Padua and Venice began to collect the most recent national video art production.

The proposed project
The project is called ARType. It results from the desire of exploring some archetypes of contemporary imaginary as primary elements of human culture seen through the eye of art. Indeed, the neologism the project’s title is inspired to is the combination of art and archetypes, in the belief that the experimental language of video art provides a privileged access to the complexity of anthropological structures in today’s world.

Rationale
The idea of archetype, that transversally embraces the entire history of human knowledge, from the Classical tradition through the nineteenth-century humanities, has acquired an even larger symbolic value in the world of art and a social relevance revealed by the artist’s intervention. Indeed, the archetypal forms of human existence silently and quietly shape the realms of ordinary life; they affect our habits, our attitudes, our small daily gestures. And all of this happens because archetypes are original forms – arché/týpos –, ancestral displays of symbolic imagination, expressions of the collective unconscious rooted in the innermost spaces of the self and ceaselessly repeating themselves.
The destiny of art is breaking such monotonous sequence. Artists have always been the interpreters
of a “vision” – this is also true of the wide range of original experimenters who work with the language of video, the expressive means that inherently aspires to subvert the ordinary mechanisms
of visual addiction.

Works selected
The curators – Guido Bartorelli, Paolo Granata, Silvia Grandi, Fabiola Naldi, Stefania Portinari, professors at the universities of Bologna, Padua and Venice – have selected the works of thirty-six Italian contemporary artists and have referred them to six archetypes: Ritual, Play, Territory, Gesture, Journey, the Self.
The thirty-six works selected aim at tracing an anthropological map of contemporary imaginary by revealing some traits of the visual unconscious, evoking the primary experiences of human existence in order to discover the irresistible fascination of archetypes in a world that is crowded with images.

Plot

Three stories of courage and compassion in three documentaries that commemorate the Canadian contribution in the liberation of Italy: the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers during World War II in Ortona 1943: A Bloody Christmas, the bravery of those who took part in the invasion of Sicily in Operation Husky and the touching testimony of Gino Farnetti-Bragaglia, found and adopted by three Canadian soldiers in Torrice, near Frosinone, after a deadly battle between Canadian and German Armoured units.

Plot

The film is set in today’s Italy, overloaded with public debt and struggling to emerge from recession with a jobless rate of more than 40 percent among non-studying 15-24-year-olds. The story focuses on 36-year-old Luca Medici from Bari, in the southeastern region of Puglia, a husband and father who, like many Italians, has lived for years beyond his means. After years of unexpected success as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman and lavish spending on high-tech gadgets, he suddenly loses his job and is haunted by motley creditors. Medici’s family life is strained, with a wife who is also about to lose her job and a nine-year-old son with whom he has difficulty relating. So he decides to gamble everything with a dream holiday aimed at patching up family differences.

Trama

Se sarai promosso con tutti dieci papà ti regala una vacanza da sogno: è questa la promessa che Checco fa al figlio Nicolò. Fin qui tutto bene, il problema è che Checco, venditore di aspirapolvere in piena crisi sia con il fatturato che con la moglie, non può permettersi di regalare al figlio nemmeno un giorno al mare. E quando Nicolò riceve la pagella perfetta, la promessa va mantenuta. Plot

Paolo is a 45-year-old Italian who has lived in Germany for twenty years. One day his brother calls him to give him the news of his mother’s death. Paolo and his wife immediately travel to Italy, only to realize that it was nothing but a hoax: the mother is quite well and Paolo is needed merely to resolve some serious budgetary shortfalls. The stay turns out to have powerful dramatic consequences, as Paolo is forced to confront his past. His family ties slowly unravel, bringing shock and revelations to everyone involved.

Dopo due decenni che ha lasciato la Puglia in seguito ad un incidente dalle cause sconosciute, Paolo è costretto a rientrare dalla Germania per le gravi condizioni di salute della madre. E’ la storia di un analista alle prese con tre casi disperati: una libraia che si innamora di un ladro di libri; una lesbica che decide di diventare etero; e una diciottenne che perde la testa per un cinquantenne. Ma il vero caso disperato sarà quello del povero analista, se calcolate che le tre pazienti sono le sue tre adorate figlie.

Mais le vrai cas désespéré est celui du pauvre analyste car ces trois patientes sont en réalité ses trois filles bien-aimées.

Irene lives alone a pretty isolated life. Her clandestine job is to help terminally-ill people to die with dignity by giving them a drug. One day she supplies a new “client” with a fatal dose, only to find out he’s perfectly healthy. Irene is determined not to be responsible for his suicide. From this moment, Irene and Grimaldi are locked unwillingly in a tense and unusual relationship which will change Irene’s life forever.

Miele narra la storia di Irene, una ragazza di trent’anni che ha deciso di aiutare le persone che soffrono: malati terminali che vogliono abbreviare l’agonia, persone le cui sofferenze intaccano la dignità di essere umano. Un giorno a richiedere il suo servizio è un settantenne in buona salute, che ritiene semplicemente di aver vissuto abbastanza. L’incontro metterà in discussione le convinzioni di Irene e la coinvolgerà in un dialogo serrato lungo il quale la relazione tra i due sembrerà infittirsi di sottintesi e ambiguità affettive.

Naples, 1973. Peppino Sansone, a sensitive but clumsy nine-year-old boy, lives in a dysfunctional and bizarre family. His mother Rosaria has fallen prey to depression and isolates herself in anguished silence, after finding out that her husband cheats on her using his blue FIAT 850 as an alcove for his trysts.

Peppino’s father tries to distract him from the family troubles by giving him three chicks to raise as pets. The chicks, however, eventually die.

Peppino’s aunt and uncle, Titina and Salvatore, provide a respite of sorts by taking him to nightclub parties and feminist rallies. However, Peppino’s greatest friend is his cousin Gennaro, an odd character who thinks he is Superman.

When Gennaro suddenly dies after being run over by a bus, Peppino uses his imagination to bring Gennaro back to live as a superhero and life coach. Thanks to Gennaro’s ‘advice,’ Peppino is able to face his daily troubles and confront the complicated world of grown-ups.

Ivan Cotroneo is a successful Italian director, screenwriter and writer. He was born in Naples in 1968 and studied cinema in Rome where he graduated in 1992. Since then his career has never stopped developing, he published four novels and wrote/ collaborated in a large number of screenplays for movies as well as for talk shows. The film Kryptonite nella borsa (Kryptonite!) has been adapted from his homonymous novel, written in 2007. He wrote the script from his own novel with the help of two other screenwriters: Ludovica Rampoldi and Monica Rametta. The film has been screened at the CINE LUMIERE in London, for the second edition of Cinema Made In Italy.

Trama

Nella Napoli del 1973, Peppino Sansone, un sensibile bambino di 9 anni impacciato ed occhialuto, vive in una famiglia alquanto bizzarra e sopra le righe.

Sua madre Rosaria è entrata in depressione e si è chiusa in un angosciante silenzio, dopo aver scoperto i tradimenti del marito commerciante, che utilizza come alcova una Fiat 850 azzurra. Il padre cerca di distrarre il figlio dalle vicende familiari regalandogli tre pulcini da allevare come animali da compagnia, che però faranno una brutta fine.

A distrarre Peppino ci pensano i giovani zii hippie, Salvatore e Titina, che lo coinvolgono in feste in discoteca e manifestazioni femministe. Ma il più grande amico di Peppino è suo cugino Gennaro, un tipo strano che si crede Superman.

Quando il cugino muore improvvisamente investito da un autobus, Peppino, grazie alla sua fantasia, lo riporta in vita nel suo immaginario, come supereroe e maestro di vita. Grazie ai suoi ‘consigli’, Peppino affronta le vicissitudini quotidiane e si avvicina al complicato mondo degli adulti.

Per il cinema ha collaborato, oltre che per Mine Vaganti di Ozpetek, alle sceneggiature dei film di Pappi Corsicato (Chimera, I Vesuviani), Renato De Maria (Paz! e La prima linea), Daniele Luchetti (Dillo con parole mie), Riccardo Milani (Piano, solo), Maria Sole Tognazzi (L’uomo che ama), Luca Guadagnino (Io sono l’amore).
Per la televisione ha scritto tra l’altro Un posto Tranquillo diretto da Luca Manfredi, Pinocchio, per la regia di Alberto Sironi, Sissi di Xavier Schwarzenberger e Storia di Laura di Andrea Porporati. È l’autore di format, soggetti e sceneggiature di Tutti Pazzi per Amore, la serie diretta da Riccardo Milani di cui si stanno ultimando le riprese della seconda serie. Sempre per la televisione, è stato coautore degli spettacoli comici L’Ottavo Nano, Mmmmhhh, BRA-Braccia Rubate all’Agricoltura e del talk show “Parla con me”.
Ha adattato per il teatro “Le Regole dell’Attrazione” di Bret Easton Ellis e Closer di Patrick Marber. È il traduttore ufficiale per l’Italia delle opere letterarie di Hanif Kureishi e Michael Cunningham.

Plot

Naples 1973 : Peppino Sansone, un enfant sensible de 9 ans rondelet et à lunettes vit dans une famille plutôt bizarre. Sa mère Rosaria dépressive s’est enfermée dans un angoissant silence après avoir découvert les infidélités de son mari commerçant. Le père cherche à sortir son fils des problèmes familiaux en lui offrant trois poussins à élever comme des animaux de compagnie qui finalement feront une triste fin.
Néanmoins, les oncles hippies Salvatore et Titina se chargeront de distraire Peppino en l’emmenant en discothèque et dans des manifestations féministes. Mais le plus grand ami de Peppino est son cousin Gennaro, un type étrange qui se prend pour Superman. Quand ce dernier meurt subitement renversé par un autobus, Peppino, grâce à sa fantaisie, le ramène à la vie dans un monde imaginaire comme un super héros et maître de vie. Ainsi grâce à ses « conseils », Peppino affronte les vicissitudes quotidiennes et approche le monde compliqué des adultes.

Ivan Cotroneo est né à Naples où il étudie la jurisprudence qu’il arrête pour se rendre à Rome où en 1992 il obtient un diplôme de scénariste auprès du Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Ses premiers approches du cinéma se font grâce à Pappi Corsicato, pour lequel Ivan Cotroneo écrit un épisode de La stirpe di Iana inclus dans le film collectif I vesuviani ainsi que la mise en scène du long métrage Chimera. Ivan Cotroneo travaille aussi comme metteur en scène pour la télévision : fictions, mini-séries, ainsi que pour le théâtre en adaptant l’édition italienne de Closer de Patrick Marber ainsi que Le regole dell’attrazione de Bret Easton Ellis, en outre il a aussi écrit des spectacles comiques et un monologue pour Claudio Gioè : Se stanotte sono qui. En 1999, il aborde le domaine littéraire en publiant chez Bompiani un recueil de citations Il piccolo libro della rabbia. D’autres publications suivront les années suivantes : dont La kryptonite nella borsa (2007), Un bacio (2010), En 2011 il débute comme réalisateur avec le film La kryptonite nella borsa, tiré de son roman homonyme et présenté au concours Festival international du film de Rome.

A television studio is used by day to film a TV series, but in the evenings, the premises are the domain of the employees of a cleaning company, most of them immigrants. One evening, the  the camera storage door is left open, and Dilip gets a sudden urge to try one out. Gradually, an idea develops: why not use the studio at night to film video messages that other immigrants can send to their families?

In un gioco di rimandi e agnizioni, istruzioni e ristrutturazioni i protagonisti di questa storia disegneranno il loro futuro.

This is the story of Arturo. As child, Arturo is particularly attentive and sensitive to the “criminal oddities” he is used to witnessing every day in his city. In his humorous tone, he tells us how he found himself caught in a double endeavor: he juggles hilariously between his love for beautiful and unattainable Flora, with whom he is madly in love, and a series of Mafia incidents that have struck his life and exploded into the bloody mass murderer season of the ’80s and the ’90s. Over the years, all the characters lead somewhat of a double life consisting of birthday parties, love affairs and career choices on one hand, and of bombing attacks, threats, murder victims and silence on the other. Both as a child and as an adult, Arturo’s challenge is dealing with Palermo’s split reality: finding the right answers to fulfill his heart’s desires as well as his sense of civic responsibility.

Il film narra l’educazione sentimentale e civile di un bambino, Arturo, che nasce a Palermo lo stesso giorno in cui Vito Ciancimino, mafioso di rango, è stato eletto sindaco. E’ una storia d’amore che racconta i tentativi di Arturo di conquistare il cuore della sua amata Flora, una compagna di banco di cui si è invaghito alle elementari che vede come una principessa. Attraverso questa tenera ma divertente storia d’amore, il pubblico verrà coinvolto emotivamente negli eventi più tragici della nostra storia recente. Esordisce come aiuto regista di Franco Zeffirelli (Un tè con Mussolini) (1998) e due anni dopo assiste Marco Tullio Giordana ne I cento passi (2000), vincitore di quattro David di Donatello e di un premio alla Mostra di Venezia. Nel 2013 ha debuttato alla regia cinematografica dirigendo e interpretando il film, La mafia uccide solo d’estate.
