Plot

Gilles is suffering from amnesia as the result of a mysterious accident. He returns to his wife of fifteen years, a stranger to himself. What did their married life used to be like? From what she’s telling him, he tries to piece together what their relationship was like. Can Gilles be sure he is the man she describes, and is she even his real wife? The path to the truth is complex and painful, and full of surprises for both of them in this suspenseful thriller. A dark comedy full of surprises, in which light-hearted banter alternates with full-scale wars.

The year 2000 marked his debut in feature films with “Almost Blue”. “Almost Blue” won the “David di Donatello”, “Nastro D’Argento” and “Ciak d’Oro” and was selected for the “Semaine de la Critique” and the “Camera d’Or” at the 54th Cannes Film Festival. The film was also a finalist at the Hollywood Film Festival and selected for the competition at Montreal. His second feature “The Vanity Serum” was released in 2004 and selected for the Sao Paulo International Film Festival, the Brussels Fantasy Film Festival and Pifan in Puchon, Korea.

Trama

Dopo aver subito un brutto incidente domestico, Elia torna a casa dall’ospedale completamente privo di memoria: non riconosce più neppure la moglie, che tenta di ricostruire la loro vita di coppia tassello dopo tassello cercando di oscurarne le ombre. Via via che si riportano alla luce informazioni dimenticate si manifestano delle crepe: sono molte le cose che cominciano a non tornare. Come mai lei mente? E perché non vuole darsi fisicamente a lui, che pure è fortemente attratto da lei? Per quale motivo lui – che afferma di essere completamente privo di memoria – si ricorda di certi particolari del viaggio di nozze?

Nel 1997 opziona i diritti di un piccolo libro sconosciuto, Almost Blue, e nel 2000 dirige Lorenza Indovina nel film tratto dal romanzo di Carlo Lucarelli: questo lavoro gli vale il Ciak d’oro, il David di Donatello e il Nastro d’argento come miglior regista esordiente e l’arrivo tra i finalisti all’Hollywood Film Festival. Entusiasta della storia di Emilio D’Alessandro, l’autista di Stanley Kubrick, sceglie di dirigere un documentario che parli del dapporto tra i due e dell’universo che hanno attraversato assieme, firmando nel 2015 la regia di S Is for Stanley.
