Plot
Gemma leaves Rome to visit Sarajevo with her son, Pietro. Sixteen years earlier, Gemma escaped the war-torn city with Pietro while Diego remained behind.
As she uses the visit to repair her difficult relationship with Pietro, she also confronts her past. She first met and fell in love with Diego while visiting Sarajevo as a student in the 1980s. After many upheavals, the two lovers found passionate, if temporary, happiness. They desperately wanted children but Gemma could not conceive. As Sarajevo was being torn apart by the siege of 1992, they found a possible surrogate – Aska, a young and beautiful musician. Gemma pushed her into Diego’s arms, only to be overwhelmed by guilt and jealousy. Now, a revelation awaits Gemma in Sarajevo that will force her to face the full extent of her loss, the true horror of war and the redemptive power of love.
Trama
Carica di ricordi degli anni di guerra, Gemma si reca a Sarajevo con suo figlio Pietro.
Diciannove anni prima lei lasciò la città in pieno conflitto con Pietro appena nato, lasciandosi alle spalle suo marito Diego, Gojko, l’irriverente poeta bosniaco, Aska, la ribelle ragazza musulmana e la piccola Sebina. L’intenso amore e la felicità tra Diego e Gemma non erano abbastanza per colmare l’impossibilità di Gemma a concepire figli. Nella Sarajevo distrutta dalla guerra, i due trovarono una possibile surrogata, Aska. Gemma spinse Diego tra le sue braccia per poi essere sopraffatta dal senso di colpa e dalla gelosia. Ora una verità attende Gemma a Sarajevo, che la costringe ad affrontare la profondità della sua perdita, il vero orrore della guerra e il potere di redenzione dell’amore.
