Plot

The film tells the story of the friendship between a young Chinese woman and a fisherman of Slavic descent.

The story takes place on an island in the Venetian lagoon which is going through a period of economic and social turmoil. Shun Li moves to the small town of Chioggia, where she works as a bartender in a tavern. Here she meets Bepi, also called “the Poet.”

Shun Li and the Poet represent two worlds in crisis: one is the world of a woman who abandoned her roots to find fortune abroad, the other world is a man who feels that his roots have been transformed by economic growth.

These two worlds sense each other and realize that they have the same dilemma. They try to save each other, by relying more on poetry than reality; however, this salvation is hampered by the conflict between their communities, the Italian and the Chinese.

Director of films and documentaries for cinema and television, Sagre is also a researcher in the Sociology of Communication. He has dedicated over ten years of his life to the issue of migration, with an emphasis on ethics and injustice, as well as the promotion of cultural exchanges. He is the founder of the association ZaLab.

He loves mixing the methods and styles of documentary cinema with the aesthetic tension of international independent fiction films; he works with non-professional actors and always chooses locations in the real world.

Trama

Il film racconta la storia dell’amicizia tra una giovane donna cinese immigrata ed un pescatore di origini slave, su un’isola della laguna veneta che sta attraversando un periodo di cambiamenti economici e sociali.

Shun Li si trasferisce nella piccola città di Chioggia dove lavora come barista in un’osteria. Qui incontra Bepi, soprannominato “il Poeta”.

Shun Li e il Poeta rappresentano due mondi in crisi: quello di chi ha abbandonato le proprie radici e quello di chi sente le proprie radici trasformate profondamente dalla crescita economica.

Questi due mondi si annusano e capiscono di avere lo stesso problema affidandosi più alla poesia che alla realtà e cercando di salvarsi reciprocamente. Una salvezza ostacolata però dal contrasto tra le loro comunità, quella italiana e quella cinese.
