Plot

It tells the World War II era story of a cynical, successful businessman named Domenico, who – after meeting a naive country girl, Filumena Marturano – one night in a Neapolitan brothel – keeps frequenting her for years in an on-off relationship, as she continues work-ing as a prostitute. He eventually takes her in his house as a semi-official mistress under the pretense that she take care of his ailing, senile mother.

Vittorio De Sica – born in Sora on 1901, died in Neully-sur-Seine on 1974 – was an Ital-ian director and actor, a leading figure in the neorealist movement and overall considered one of the most important cinema figures of all times.Four of the films he directed won Academy Awards: Sciuscià and Bicycle Thieves were awarded honorary Oscars, while Ieri, oggi, domani and Il giardino dei Finzi Contini won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. All these films are considered as pillars of the canon of classic cinema.

Trama

Domenico Soriano, ricco pasticcere e impenitente donnaiolo napoletano, è legato all’ex prostituta Filumena Marturano da una relazione più che ventennale. Conosciutala al tempo della seconda guerra mondiale e dopo averla tolta dalla casa di tolleranza in cui era, dapprima l’aveva sistemata in un appartamento di sua proprietà e poi l’aveva accolta in casa sua e della sua anziana madre come amante-convivente nonché governante.

Vittorio De Sica

Vittorio De Sica – nato a Sora nel 1901 e morto a Neully-sur-Seine nel 1974 – è stato un attore, regista e sceneggiatore italiano. Tra i cineasti più influenti della storia del cinema, è stato inoltre attore di teatro e documentarista. È considerato uno dei padri del neorealismo e, allo stesso tempo, uno dei maggiori registi ed interpreti della commedia all’italiana. Vittorio De Sica ha vinto ben quattro premi Oscar per Sciuscià, Ladri di bi-ciclette, Ieri, oggi, domani e per Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini, tutti premiati nella catego-ria Miglior film straniero.
