Plot
An old woman finds a baby among the cauliflowers in her garden. She takes him in and calls him Totò. When she dies, he is sent to an orphanage, and leaves as a teenager. When Totò goes out in the world he soon turns up among other homeless people in a barren field outside Milan. With Totò’s help, the eccentric misfits are turned into a warm-hearted community. Among them is a traitor who informs the wealthy Mr. Mobbi about the oil that the misfits have found on the land.

Vittorio De Sica
Vittorio De Sica was an Italian actor, director, producer and screenwriter who began his career in the film and stage industry at the age of 16. His charming demeanor and good looks, besides his great talent, made him an instant star and lead him to appear in over 100 films. He turned to directing during WWII and became part of Italian Neorealist film. De Sica continued acting and directing up until his death in 1974.

Trama
Una buona vecchina, la signora Lolotta, trova un giorno sotto un cavolo un bel bambino, lo prende con sé e gli fa da mamma. Quando Lolotta muore, il bambino, Totò, viene trasferito in un orfanotrofio. Ne esce ormai ragazzo, e il caso lo mette in contatto con un gruppo di poveri, accampati in una zona abbandonata della periferia milanese. Con la sua profonda bontà, Totò conquista le simpatie di tutti, esercitando un’influenza benefica sugli amici. Un getto di petrolio esce un giorno dal terreno abusivamente occupato dai poveretti: un traditore informa il ricco industriale Mobbi che vorrà sbarazzarsi degli abusivi.

Vittorio De Sica
Vittorio De Sica è stato un famoso regista, attore, produttore e sceneggiatore italiano. Ha iniziato la carriera alla giovane età di sedici anni. I suoi modi affascinanti e il bell’aspetto, oltre che l’indubbio talento, hanno contribuito a renderlo la star di oltre cento film. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale è entrato a far parte della corrente del Neorealismo, di cui è stato un esponente di spicco. Ha continuato a recitare e a dirigere film fino alla morte, nel 1974.
