This year’s David di Donatello Awards (the Italian Academy Awards) was the most exciting ever.
What a race! We’ve never seen such stiff competition, proof of a thriving Italian film industry. The 5 nominated films, La Pazza Gioia (Like Crazy), Indivisibili (Indivisible), Veloce Come Il Vento (Italian Race), Fai Bei Sogni (Sweet Dreams), and Fiore, are all David-worthy, but hardly the only films this year that merited nominations. It was a very good year for Italian cinema!
Unlike years in the past when the Davids were just another chance to award the same predictable winners, looking out at the #David2017 audience we saw the new face of Italian cinema
The veterans were there, like Paolo Virzì, who won very big, by the way. His La Pazza Gioia (Like Crazy) – which we co-presented with EUFF Toronto in November – won Best Picture, he won Best Director, and… Continue reading

In the Tel Aviv airport departure hall, Fanny (83 years old) says goodbye to her daughter and grandson who dropped her off. She’s leaving for France, more specifically the Creuse region, which is hot and sunny, even in late summer. A taxi drops the old lady off near an overgrown path where she bumps into a 9-year-old girl who, despite the season, is warmly wrapped up. The little girl leads her to a snowed-under park where, after a few turns, she finds a large house. That’s when Fanny starts travelling back in time.

One day, however, an accident leads to the fall of the wall, and later the sbornians begin to discover the modern customs. Two local musicians, Kraunus and Pletskaya, observe the reactions of their countrymen: while some quickly adopt the foreign culture, others prefer to reaffirm the sbornians traditions and resist imperialism.

We’re well into planning and organizing for our 5th edition of ICFF Junior – our youth focused international festival running from May 8th until May 13th, 2017. We’re also thrilled to be working again with our partners and film locations at TIFF Bell Lightbox, Cineplex Yorkdale, Cineplex Cinemas Theatre in Vaughan, and SilverCity Cinema in Richmond Hill.
Another new exciting partnership that we’re involved with this year is with the Giffoni Film Festival, one of the world’s largest festivals for youth. We’ll have the honour of hosting Claudio Gubitosi, the artistic director and founder of GFF.
The films selected are all screened in their original languages, with English subtitles. We have expanded the festival to an international festival, featuring films originating in Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tagalog.
The 9 films that we’ve selected to be screened are:
Le Voyage de Fanny is a Canadian Premiere that depicts a young girl attempting to escape the Nazi regime that’s occupied France. Along with her sisters, Fanny must face great challenges to get out of harms way.

“Erin go bragh” to our favorite Irish-Italian: the celebrated and award-winning author and screenwriter Margaret Mazzantini, or as she is otherwise known, la Sig.ra Castellitto.Being married since 1987 to and collaborating with her director, actor, and screenwriter husband Sergio Castellito has truly been “una vita contenta”; in fact, the couple has given the middle name Contento to all four of their children. The Castellitos are truly an Italian film industry power couple with films like Non Ti Muovere (Don’t Move) based on the award-winning book by Mazzantini. The very dark, disturbing book became the equally dark and disturbing movie directed by and starring her husband who played Timoteo, a prominent surgeon/debaucher. His co-star is Penelope Cruz in one of the most unflattering roles ever in the history of the movies, Italia, the prostitute.
The couple’s stellar resume also includes the 2015 Nessuno Si Salva Da Solo (You Can’t Save Yourself Alone) and the 2012 Venuto Al Mondo (Twice Born).
Their latest collaboration is the upcoming Fortunata, starring Jasmine Trinca, Stefano Accorsi and Alessandro Borghi.
Following in their footsteps, their oldest son Pietro has evidently caught the acting bug and starred in É Nato Una… Continue reading
Seven time Best Actress winner Margherita Buy’s brilliant career isn’t just special because she’s won more David Di Donatello Awards (Italian Oscars) than Sophia Loren, and not because she’s worked for about every important director in Italy. Margherita Buy isn’t just special because of her dozens of roles spanning three decades and because she’s still getting the sexy ones at 55.
La Buy, #16 on the 2016 Ciak Magazine, is one of Italy’s greatest living actresses because she’s talented, works hard, and is as humble about it all as anyone could possibly be.
“I’ve been able to play women who evolve and change and I was able to evolve with my characters. I’ve always felt close to the women I’ve played,” she says.
Lovely Alba Rohrwacher looks like she’s stepped out of a Botticelli painting but as an actress, couldn’t be more contemporary and her roles couldn’t be more diverse. The 2009 Berlinale Shooting Star has made good on the promise she showed, starring as a mentally unbalanced “crunchy” mom in Saverio Costanzo’s… Continue reading
The Oscars have been handed out, and even though Gianfranco Rosi’s Fuocoammare (Fire At Sea) lost in the Best Documentary race, we were excited to watch Italians Alessandro Bertolazzi and Giorgio Gregorini accept the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on Suicide Squad, and Italian-Canadian Alan Barillaro for the Best Animated Short Film, Piper.
But the fun isn’t over yet; last week the nominations for the Italian Academy Awards were announced in anticipation of the award ceremony in Rome on March 27.
In Italy the Oscar is a David, the David di Donatello Awards, named after Donatello’s David and this year the big competition will be between two films we love, Indivisibili (Indivisible) from director Edoardo De Angelis and La Pazza Gioia (Like Crazy) from director Paolo Virzì. The films go toe to toe, having been nominated in 17 categories each including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.
Each film has two strong candidates in a category overflowing with talent; young actresses Daphne Scoccia (Fiore) and Matilda De Angelis (Veloce Come Il Vento) picked the wrong year to give their wonderful performances and will most likely… Continue reading
Let’s look at nominee for Best Documentary Gianfranco Rosi: His Fuocoammare (Fire At Sea) has won the Berlinale Golden Bear, the European Film Award for Best Documentary, a Special Nastro from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists (Nastro D’Argento Awards) the London Critics Circle Award for Documentary of the Year (hold on, we aren’t done yet!), and a nomination for a French César Award (TBA 2/24).
Would an Oscar be too much to ask for Rosi’s phenomenal account of the European migrant crisis? Berlin Film Festival jury president Meryl Streep said of it: It’s a documentary, I guess. But it’s also art. The way the truth is arranged makes it sort of like a poem. And I don’t mean like a twee kind of poem, I mean something really essential. It’s unavoidable.”
Gianfranco Rosi’s strength is what jury president Bernardo Bertolucci called his “filmmaking with no judgement” when Rosi’s documentary Sacro GRA won the Golden Lion at the 2013 Venice Film… Continue reading

Cinepanettone 2.0
While in Rome during the Christmas season it’s fun to spend time at the movie theater. There’s clearly a love/hate relationship with Italian Christmas movies (affectionately referred to as Cinepanettone in Italy) and the last few years in film are morphing into something that could be referred to as Cinepanettone 2.0.
A great example is one that comes from award-winning Paolo Genovese, the director of the Perfetti Sconoscuti (Perfect Strangers). His Una Famiglia Perfetta (A Perfect Family, 2012) is more of the ‘Bad Santa’ genre than of the ‘Natale a New York’ kind, and from the first scene in which “Papà” Leone, (played by Sergio Castellitto) tells the youngest son that he is fat, hates his glasses, and he says he doesn’t understand why he has to spend Christmas with a son who is so fat and ugly you’ll be horrified/mesmerized.
The trailer and reviews reveal that Leone, though abusive, is not an abusive parent, but rather an abusive employer. The wealthy and mysterious Leone has hired everybody in the house to play parts, pretending to be his “perfect family” for the holidays. A beautiful wife (Claudia Gerini), a loving mother, a brother (Marco… Continue reading
Meet the young actors and actresses who are changing the face of Italian cinema.
This month, the ICFF Jr. festival line up will be unveiled. Our Jr. festival is in it’s 5th year and promotes film as an art form using the platform of Italian Cinema, while providing students (ages 8 to 18) with exposure to International culture and language. The program includes feature films, documentaries, animations and shorts. It provides educators with an alternative teaching method that respects a variety of learning styles. In honour of our ICFF Jr. program these are the young actors and actresses who are changing the face of Italian cinema.

Blu, a child star who played Nanni Moretti’s daughter in Caos Calmo (Quiet Chaos) is now setting out on a brilliant grown-up career:

Once upon a time there were three neighboring kingdoms each with a magnificent castle, from which ruled kings and queens, princes and princesses.
One king was a fornicating libertine, another captivated by a strange animal, while one of the queens was obsessed by her wish for a child.
Sorcerers and fairies, fearsome monsters, ogres and old washerwomen, acrobats and courtesans are the protagonists of this loose interpretation of the celebrated tales of Giambattista Basile.

Angela, a beautician, has an affair with 20-year-old Luca.

All Roads Lead to Rome, produced by Andrea Iervolino is awarded the IC SAVINGS Prize for Best Canadian Film at the Italian Contemporary Film Festival in Canada
The 5th edition of the ICFF saw the IC Savings Award assigned to the film All Roads Lead to Rome, produced by Andrea Iervolino for AMBI Pictures, directed by Ella Lemhagen featuringa Raoul Bova, Sarah Jessica Parker and Claudia Cardinale.
The IC Savings Award for the Best Canadian Film was given to this Italian-American-Canadian coproduction, with a special mention to the relentless activity of the Italian-Torontonian producer Andrea Iervolino, founder and partner of AMBI/AIC, together with Monika Bacardi.
Iervolino’s activity in the field of film production and distribution represents a bridge between Italy and North America, and All Roads Lead to Rome is an example of how cinematic works can trespass borders and cross oceans to make two continents meet. Andrea Iervolino and AMBI/AIC are the most active and consistent link for such an encounter, and the IC Savings Award constitutes a most prestigious acknowledgment to his work and his contribution.
GIANNI MINÀ AWARDED IN TORONTO for the World premier of his latest documentary “Pope Francis, Cuba and Fidel”
The World Premiere of “Pope Francis, Cuba and Fidel,” directed by Gianni Minà and presented by ICFF and AMBI screened in Toronto in occasion of the TIFF, Toronto International Film Festival, was met with standing ovation and appreciation from Canadian critics.
TORONTO – ICFF Artistic Director Cristiano de Florentiis awarded Gianni Minà with the ICFF Award of Excellence for addressing themes of historical, economic, social and cultural development with insight, nuance, professionalism and personal commitment.
Minà’s documentary explores, in little more than two hours, the recent story of Cuba and its undisputed leader, Fidel Castro, through the lens of last year’s visit of Pope Francis to the Caribbean island.
Fidel appears onscreen at age 89, his body marked by his venerable age, but also by a consistently determined spirit; he emphasizes the value of the revolution that he began over sixty years ago in Cuba.
“Fidel Castro was the only one to lead both a revolution and a country, Cuba, which – despite the long suffering – has never known defeat,” said Minà at the conclusion of the Q&A to the audience.… Continue reading
Continue reading

Claudia Cardinale has more than 110 films and 30 Italian and international awards to her credit. She has worked with the most prestigious directors, as Visconti, Fellini, Zurlini, Leone, Bolognini, Herzog and De Oliveira, as the protagonist of high quality and astounding successful films.
The ICFF awarded her with a Prize assigned to Carlo Verdone and Roberto Benigni in the previous years, during the Festival Closing Night, at the presentation of the film All Roads Lead to Rome, featuring her and Raoul Bova. The TIFF Bell Lightbox was crowded with a vast and enthusiastic audience, who honoured her with a standing ovation, conquered by her talent and her charm.
